The Common Winterberry, also called in Latin Ilex verticillata, can be found more or less around the eastern and central United States; parts of Canada. Its morphology is mainly a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub, making it a plant very different from others. In the summer, its leafs are changing looking like deciduous with alternate leaf arrangement and in the automn it can be described as not especially showy. The Common Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) grows flowers that are dioecious, with male and female plants and grows fruits, characterized as only present on female plant. An interesting thing is its bark, where a special pattern can be found, dark gray to brown on it. An interesting fact regarding the way it is cultured is that full sun to partial shade; more sun means more fruit on females However, an inconvinient with the Common Winterberry can be that fruit set only on pollinated female plants You can recognize a Ilex verticillata having its deciduous, alternate leaves.
