The European Hornbeam, also called in Latin Carpinus betulus, lives around Europe and Asia Minor. It usually looks like a deciduous, medium sized tree, making it a fabulous plant! In the summer, its leafs are changing looking like alternate, deciduous leaves and in the automn it is more or less fall color is yellow to yellow-green. The European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) also has flowers being monoecious with male and female flowers on the same plant and the fruits it has are a ribbed nutlet subtended by a 1" to 1.5" papery, leaf-like bract. An interesting characteristic it has is its bark, where a special pattern can be found, interesting, smooth fluted bark on it. An interesting information to note about its culture is that very soil adaptable as long as the soil is well-drained However, another characteristic with the European Hornbeam can be that generally free of problems We can easily identify Carpinus betulus having its buds hook or curve back around the stem. The European Hornbeam's propagation is very interesting since it is mainly done by seed, but requires stratification
