| The Japanese Holly, known in its Latin name to be Ilex crenata, i usually found close to Japan. It is usually shaped as evergreen shrub with compact, upright, spreading habit, making it a very special plant among others! In the summer, its foliage looks like dark green, lustrous leaves and in the automn its foliage then is evergreen, so no fall color. The Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata) grows flowers that are dioecious, with male and female plants and its fruits are more or less female plants may produce 0.25" diameter black fruit. It has a special bark, where we see smooth on it. An important information to know regarding the way it is cultured is that needs protection from drying winter winds However, an inconvinient with the Japanese Holly can be that lack of all around cold hardiness in any location in zone 5 We can easily recognize a Ilex crenata having its alternate leaf arrangement and small marginal serrations separate it
from Buxus sp. which has opposite leaves and no serrations. The Japanese Holly's propagation method is done in an interesting way since it does it by semi-hardwood or winter cuttings for cultivars
