The Nikko Maple, known in its Latin name to be Acer nikoense (maximowiczianum), can be found more or less around Japan and part of China, but uncommon there. It normally look like small, rounded or vase-shaped tree, making it an uncommon plant! In the summer, its foliage is more or less opposite, trifoliate, with 2" to 4" long leaflets and in the automn it is more or less can turn reddish or burgundy, but the color is usually yellow with muted red overtones. The Nikko Maple (Acer nikoense (maximowiczianum)) grows flowers that are yellow, not especially showy and contains fruits that are felt-covered samaras, 1" to 2" long. It has a special bark, where a special pattern can be found, smooth, nonexfoliating, ash gray and handsome on it. An interesting fact about its culture is that best grown in slightly acid, moist, well-drained loamy soil However, a bad thing with the Nikko Maple can be that relatively maintenance and problem free We can easily identify Acer nikoense (maximowiczianum) with its large, sharp-pointed terminal bud.
