Sheep-laurel
Latin Name:
Kalmia angustifolia
location:
Michigan down through Georgia
The Sheep-laurel, originally named Kalmia angustifolia, is normally found around Michigan down through Georgia. To recognize it it is mainly an evergreen shrub, making it a very special plant among others! In the summer, its foliage is more or less opposite to whorled leaf arrangement and in the automn its foliage then is evergreen; no fall color. The Sheep-laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) has beautiful flowers that are rose-pink flowers and its fruits are more or less non-ornamental, small dehiscent capsules. It has a special bark, where we see rounded, brown stems on it. An interesting fact about its culture is that partial shade to full sun An inconvenient with the Sheep-laurel can be that foliar burn in exposed sites A good way to identify a Kalmia angustifolia with its broadleaf evergreen; elliptical leaves, acute apex. The Sheep-laurel's reproduction is very interesting since it is done by seed
