The Silver Maple, originally named Acer saccharinum, can be found more or less around eastern United States and central plains, but not in the southeastern states. Also adjacent parts of Canada. It is usually shaped as large tree to around 70', but can reach well beyond 100', making it a very interesting plant! In the summer, its foliage looks like opposite leaves, 5-lobed, fairly deeply incised and in the automn it can be described as typically leaves drop a greenish yellow or green. The Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) also has flowers being monoecious with male and female flowers on separate branches of a tree; some flowers may be perfect as well and contains fruits that are samaras, 1.3" to 2.3" long, maturing in June. Its bark is very interesting, where we see trunk and branches are silvery-gray on it. An important information to know concerning its culture is that easily grown, transplanted and established so data is limited However, another characteristic with the Silver Maple can be that rapid growth creates weak wood which breaks easily in storms or under ice load We can easily recognize a Acer saccharinum with its stems when broken produce a strong odor.
