Tree of Heaven
Latin Name:
Ailanthus altissima
location:
China
The Tree of Heaven, also referred as Ailanthus altissima, is normally found around China. It is usually shaped as medium-sized shade tree, making it a plant very different from others. In the summer, its foliage looks like alternate, pinnately compound, 18" to 24" long, with up to 25 leaflets and in the automn it generally looks like none. The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) grows flowers that are blooms in early to mid-June and contains fruits that are samara, 1.5" long, on female trees. Its bark is very interesting, where a special pattern can be found, pale gray and smooth, with lighter, vertical streaks on it. An interesting fact regarding the way it is cultured is that adaptable to the most disagreeable conditions (salt, pollution, poor soil, heat, drought) Also, an inconvinient with the Tree of Heaven can be that prolific fruiting, ready germination, adaptability to harsh sites and rapid growth rate make it a noxious weed in many places A way to identify a Ailanthus altissima having its very large, pinnately compound leaves with many leaflets. The Tree of Heaven's propagation method is pretty interesting since it is done by seed
